Gaff rigged schooners are an entirely different animal from any modern day rig. They carry immense amounts of sail area close to the water to avoid excessive heeling. The sails are spread out fore-aft instead of up-down. Since the sails are shorter, the masts are also shorter and rigging loads are lesser. This translates into much less tension.

These are wonderful designs, with tall gaff mainsails that are much different from Leather's "ideal" sail. Redpath, a wonderful gaff schooner reproduced below, has a luff of 29'. Using Leather's dimensions, we would expect a head just over 24' long, a leech angling down for a length of just over 50', and a foot 29' 6".

The fore-and-aft schooner rig consists of two masts and three principal sails, viz. a mainsail, which is, in fact, a gaff-sail fitted with a boom; a spencer, or fore-sail, which is fitted with a gaff, but (generally) without a boom; and a stay-sail, which is the leading sail, and is set on the fore-stay.
