The Nagasaki area can be seen in the background. This is one of a series of images from negative numbers 045139 to 045157 taken with a camera borrowed by WO2 Syd Barber, following his release from captivity. The camera belonged to the darkroom of the British escort Aircraft Carrier HMS Speaker.

HMS SPEAKER sailed from Portland on December 6th 1943 bound for Vancouver, Canada to be modified to meet Admiralty requirements, receive her full crew compliment (SPEAKER had only a skeleton crew drafted to her at Portland due to manpower shortages), and work up ready for beginning her active service.

HMS SPEAKER (D 90) - Ruler-class Escort Aircraft Carrier. RULER-Class Escort Aircraft Carrier obtained under US/UK Lend Lease Agreement. A mercantile which was under construction by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation at Seattle and was requisitioned by by the US Navy for use as an auxiliary aircraft carrier (CVE) to be named USS DELGADA.

North China Marines - Prisoners of War HMS Speaker and the USS Catron HMS Speaker was built in Seattle in 1943 and given to the British under the Lend-Lease program. Photo below is the Speaker in the harbor at Nagasaki after boarding POWs from Fukuoka 3-B. On 17 Sep 1945 899 POWs boarded.
