Thoré-Bürger published a facsimile of the signature on page 312 of a three-part article ("Van der Meer de Delft," Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Oct. 1, Nov. 1, Dec. 1, 1866) as cat. no.1, correctly identifying it with Vermeer of Delft. It had previously been attributed to Jan Vermeer of Utrecht.
