The main reason most people come to the Las Fallas festival is to witness the burning of the sculptures on the final evening. Starting small with the burning of the children's sculptures at 10 p.m., the fires get bigger and more epic throughout the night. The biggest and most important burning is that of the sculpture in the town hall.

Today, honoring past traditions, Valencia puts a modern spin on this festival. The colorful and vibrant ninots, costing upwards of $75,000 to make, are satirical and often reflect current political figureheads and events. The ninots, some standing as tall as 98 feet, are made of combustible materials, such as wood, papier-mâché, or white cork.

Valencians are proud of their heritage and the daily processions of falla groups proclaim a long history of tradition. Las Fallas is the most important festival in Valencia and although fireworks take place throughout the entire month of March each year, between March 15th and 19th — a period known as Fallera Week — Valencia transforms from a quiet city with a population of 800,000 to over.
