The Mercato Centrale is in a beautiful building designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, the same architect who designed the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele II, and built from 1870-74 when Florence was still capital of Italy. With cast iron and glass all around, the building mixes classic to the modern: the exterior is an ample, squat base made out of local pietra serena similar to the nearby Palazzo Medici.

Staying in Florence in apartment with cooking facilities so decided to try out the Mercato Centrale. Has lots of butcher shops, produce kiosks and many places to eat on main floor but particularly on the 2nd and 3rd floor. We purchased meat twice from 2 different butchers ( yes they actually do cut the meat right there) at reasonable prices.
