The Zsolnay Porcelain Factory was one of the most renowned Hungarian makers of porcelain and stoneware in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the market for Zsolnay ceramic pieces has yet to cool.

Written by Harry Rinker Zsolnay - Description In 1853, MiklĂłs Zsolnay (1800-1880) and his son IgnĂĄc (1826-1900) established a stoneware and ceramics factory in PĂ©cs, Hungary. MiklĂłs turned over the factory to IgnĂĄc in 1854. MiklĂłs' son Vilmos Zsolnay (1828-1900) joined the firm in 1863 and purchased the factory grounds and buildings in 1864.

Miklos Zsolnay, who had experience operating another ceramics factory in Hungary, relocated his business to Pecs, a town in the country's southwestern region. His son Ignaz directed the firm from 1854 until 1868, when he turned it over to his younger brother, Vilmos.

In 1886 in a new factory was started production of stove tiles. In 1893, Zsolnay introduced porcelain pieces made of eosin. In 1900 the company was taken over by Vilmos' son, Miklos. Zsolnay frost-resisting architectural decorations were especially popular during art nouveau period.
