Santanyi is the southernmost municipality in Mallorca, 50 km from the capital Palma. It has a population of 14,500 spread over 12 areas and includes the southernmost point on the island, Cap de Ses Salines. The economy is based on tourism, fishing and agriculture. There is also the Santanyi stone which is used for private and public buildings.

This is a great way to spend a Wednesday or a Saturday on Mallorca. I always visit it each time I'm on the island. Santanyi is a proper Spanish town. Although it attracts tourists on market day, it is not a 'resort', and is a lovely place to walk around, with lots of blonde stone buildings and very narrow streets.

The village was first documented in the southeast of Mallorca in 1236 under the name Sancti Aini. In 1300 Santanyi received its town charter. Evidence of the settlement being there in the Moorish era is apparent from place named such as s'Almunia, Albocora and Benilassar. From the 14th century Santanyi was repeatedly looted by pirates.
