📋 Recipe 🥟 What Is Dduk Mandu Guk? Tteokguk (떡국) is a traditional Korean dumpling soup that's served during the Lunar New Year (or Seollal, 설날) celebrations. When translated, dduk/ddeok/teok/tteok means rice cake and guk means broth or soup. The addition of mandu (dumplings) turns the dish into Dduk Mandu Guk or Tteok Mandu Guk (떡만두국).

Tteokguk is a traditional Korean soup that is made with a savory broth (usually beef or anchovy) with round rice cake slices cooked in it. It's eaten year-round but on New Year's day, it's a must for Koreans to have at least a bowl of Tteokguk/Ddukguk (떡국).

Instructions. Place water and chicken bouillon cubes in a medium-sized pot. Allow it to come to a boil. Once it has reached a boil, add in the pre-cooked/steamed dumplings (mandu). Turn the heat down to medium-high heat, and allow it to continue cooking for about 5 minutes. That's it!

Turn off the heat, and add the green onions and sesame oil. Season with salt and black pepper, adding more to taste. Serve the soup: Divide the soup and mandu among 4 to 6 bowls. If using, crumble the nori with your hands or use kitchen shears to cut them into thin strips. Sprinkle a handful over each bowl.
