Long range, wide-body airliner. In service since 1990. Modernised, slightly stretched and re-engined development of DC-10 Tri-jet, with winglets and advanced EFIS flightdeck. Some models were built: MD-11ER for extended range, MD-11F freighter and MD-11 combi freighter/airliner. Production taken over by BOEING in 1998. Last delivery in 2001.

The MD-11 program was officially launched after a special McDonnell Douglas board meeting in December 1986. According to the Los Angeles Times, the company said it received orders from 12 customers for a total of 52 units. That month, Alitalia placed a $1.5-billion order for six MD-11s and 10 MD-82s.

Developed from the earlier DC-10, its distinctive three-engine configuration helped it to stand out wherever it flew. While it promised a lot, the MD-11, particularly in its passenger configuration, failed to live up to expectations.

The MD-11 was derived from the DC-10 but had a longer fuselage and wider wings with winglets. Power was provided by either three GE CF6-80C2 or PW 4460 turbofan engines. Four versions of the aircraft were offered: passenger, all cargo , convertible cargo, and the "combi," which carried passengers and cargo on the main deck and additional freight in the hold.

The MD-11 was launched in 1986 as a replacement for the DC-10-30, and to provide airlines with higher capacity for growth on long-haul routes. The aircraft was also intended to have a range of about 7,000nm with a standard tri-class configuration of passengers.

In addition, the vertical stabilizer above the middle engine is shorter and smaller, and another major improvement was new en­gines, especially the GE CF6-80-C2D1F, in which MTU Aero Engines has a stake (see Inside MTU).
