The Griffith Island Lighthouse, one of John Brown's Imperial Towers, was built on the east shore of Griffith Island in 1859. The keeper's house has nearly collapsed, while the lighthouse structure remains intact. The Island is privately owned, while the light station is maintained by the Coast Guard.

The Sand Island Lighthouse was built in 1881, guiding commercial and passenger ships to port. While many of the Apostle Islands were uninhabited in the 19th and 20th century, Sand Island had a population of over 100 fishermen and farmers, mostly of Norwegian descent. Emmanuel Luick, the lighthouse keeper from 1892 to 1921, wrote: "Sand Island.

Griffith Island precinct offered us a great trail one going up to the end of the pier and another turning off somewhere halfway and extending to the light house. We did both the trails with real fun seeing interesting bird species on the way. Views of the ocean from the pier and lighthouse precinct were both attractive.
