The next day Alby and Minho, a Runner, go into the Maze to investigate a report about a dead Griever. A few minutes before the Doors close, Thomas sees Minho dragging an unconscious Alby towards the Door. With no one else around to help, Thomas enters the Maze right as the Doors close behind him. Inside, Minho tells him that a Griever stung Alby.

The Maze houses strange, lethal creatures known as Grievers. All that is known about Grievers is that they are a combination of metal and flesh. The Gladers try to stay alive as well as "solve" the Maze by appointing "Runners" to run through it as fast as they can while they track movements of the walls and try to find an exit to escape.

Analysis. Minho tells Thomas that Grievers must be leaving the Maze by jumping through some sort portal beyond the Cliff. To test Minho's theory, they throw rocks off the Cliff. They all fall normally, but then Minho throws one and it disappears. They try throwing another in the same spot and it works again.

Grievers patrol the Maze at night, stinging any boy unlucky enough to be there. Grievers are artificially engineered creatures that appear in the Maze Runner book trilogy by James Dashner and The Maze Runner film. They are ferocious, bulbous beasts with a somewhat arachnid appearance, travelling about on several mechanical legs with two organic feelers on the front of the body and a long mechanical tail on the back. The Grievers seem to have been engineered by the WICKED.

In the novel The Maze Runner, Thomas and Minho trick the Grievers into jumping off the cliff. The Grievers disappear(and we later learn their lair is actually invisible, just off the cliff edge). Why didn't the Grievers jump back and chase down Thomas and Minho? It seems like the Creators purposefully spared Thomas/played favourites?

The studio initially considered a film adaptation of the short film, as it had the same tone of The Maze Runner novel they already planned to bring to the screen. Ball was then offered the chance to direct the novel adaptation. Creature designer Ken Barthelmey designed the monsters called Grievers for the film.
