The A380 leverages Airbus' expertise in aircraft design, sharing a large degree of commonality in systems, flight deck, procedures, and maintainability with the fly-by-wire A320, A330/A340 and A350 families.

That Qatar Airways is even flying the A380s at all is a surprise. The airline group's CEO, Akbar Al Baker, had been highly critical of the jet during its grounding, going as far as to tell Simple Flying that buying the giant off of Airbus had been the airline's biggest ever mistake.. For the time being, the Airbus A380 has been placed onto the Qatar Airways schedule through to October 2022.

In March 2020, Qatar Airways grounded its 10-strong Airbus A380 fleet. The A380 has very much become a victim of the pandemic, and in early 2021 Qatar Airways announced that it would retire at least half of its A380 fleet, with the future of the rest of the fleet still up in the air (no pun intended).

The A380 filled a short-term gap in Qatar Airways' fleet. "We grounded the A380s at the beginning of the pandemic, and we never wanted to fly them again," Al Baker told Executive Traveller in late 2021. None the less, Al Baker ended up bringing eight of the ten-strong A380 fleet out of mothballs to fly to key destinations including London.

Qatar Airways' A380 first class is located at the front of the upper deck, and consists of eight seats, spread across two rows in a 1-2-1 configuration. Qatar Airways' A380 first class isn't the most private or cutting edge in the world, but I do find it to be incredibly elegant. For that matter, any cabin is private when you have it to yourself. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Airbus' early concepts for the A380 teased plenty of innovative ways to use the plane's ample space. But only a handful of the dozen airlines flying the double-decker jet chose to swap revenue-raising seats for a lounge where first and business class passengers can mingle at 40,000 feet. Qatar Airways is the latest to join the superjumbo social club, alongside Gulf competitors.
